This workshop brings together early career researchers (PhD holders of less than 10 years or equivalent) based in the UK and South Africa who are interested in the role that enterprise-based initiatives and associated cross-sectoral partnerships can play in addressing social and environmental issues whilst promoting economic development. Within this theme the workshop aims to support the participants' individual career development and promote international collaboration.
The workshop provides an opportunity for these researchers, alongside an experienced team of mentors and academic subject experts, to share their own research to enhance their conceptual and practical understandings of these emerging and highly important areas of enquiry. The
workshop also allows the participants to interact with practitioner organisations.
The workshop consists of:
- opportunities to network with researchers based in the UK and South Africa;
- networking opportunities with practitioner and policy makers;
- presentations of participants' research with peer and mentor feedback;
- practical exercises and briefing sessions supporting career development;
- a practitioner day involving visits to social enterprises and partnerships in the Cape region;
- an opportunity to interact with journal editors and to develop a submission to for a journal special edition or working paper series; and
- keynotes sessions from academic experts and practitioner organisations.
This workshop is managed jointly by the Bertha Centre for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship located at the Graduate School of Business (GSB) at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the Trickle Out Africa (TOA) Project based at Essex Business School (EBS), University of Essex (UoE). This workshop is funded by the Newton Fund British Council Researcher Links programme in association with the South African National Research Foundation (NRF).
